I found this game once upon a time on ichio and I was smitten. This game is an absolute delight. Its like vaporwave mixed with pop culture and video games. The mechanics of the game are great and theres just little things here-and-there that you really enjoy. They really expanded on the demo and everything is much more fleshed out and polished. If you like adventure/exploring, this is great game to pass the time.. I have never left a Steam Review before... But I felt I had to reach out and do it for this game.At a glance, one might assume that this was one of those quickly shoveled together fad games. Produced either as an ironic joke, or a cash grab. -- This is _so_ not the case with Broken Reality, and it's absolutely ironic because the game's aesthetic is of the vaporwave culture, which in itself is a broken reflection of our cash grab society. You wouldn't think a game with such vapid goals as "Get Likes" and clicking on Ads would hold your attention and interest for very long... But "Broken Reality" is masterfully aware of what it is, and how to present itself.Everything just seems to work. It's a somewhat abstract scenario, presented in bits and pieces, but you always have just enough information, and plenty of freedom, to find new characters and goals. New mechanics are introduced just at the right time to keep it fresh, and your goals are lofty enough to be a challenge, but never feel too distant to accomplish. I managed to play through the entire game, enjoying every second of it, while only hitting the web for help once, and I think that says a lot about the approachability and intuitive nature of most of the game. I've seen posts online about glitches, but I think they were all patched out by the time I purchased it, because I never had a problem. So, the core game mechanics are there, exploring is fun, collecting is fun, the shopping minigame is fun, the points that matter are there. Now onto the icing on the cake. The art style is fantastic. I was hooked from the moment I stepped ashore and saw oldschool E-mail icons sprout wings and flutter away like a flock of gulls. The vaporwave environments, the PS1/N64 low poly weirdo characters, the animated gifs, the deliberate artifacting and vibrating, and of course the awesome parody items for sale. All this set to an engulfing soundtrack that makes you nostalgic for a 199X time that never quite existed the way people seem to think. A Broken Reality of its own, if you will. The environments are great, from the artificial happiness and palm planters of mallscapes to a hyper commercialized Blade Runner asthetic, everything works. The game even manages to throw a curve ball near the end, with an environment that hasn't seen the floor buffing machine in awhile, and even then, it all manages to work as a cohesive whole.I absolutely loved this game, and would gladly contribute to a sequel somehow.. A beautifully crafted, well executed love letter to vaporwave, the early internet, and all things aesthetic. A walking sim with light platforming and puzzles all taking place within colorful, cleverly contructed, meme-filled enviornments. The main story is light and lacking in a few departments, but somehow still pulls off an impactful, memorable ending. If you're a fan of vaporwave or internet nostalgia, you owe it to yourself to play this game.. Bought for the lulz, but instead I reflect upon my tech-based purchasing choices made over the last 16 years. I seem to be in an existential crisis.. I have become painfully aware my enslavement to consumerism and technology. Butchering pop-ups and clickbait that have assaulted me since the 90s has been uniquely satisfying. After playing this game I have discovered an irresistible urge to punch everything I like or agree with while making a thumbs up with my fist. If this doesn't become an instant cult classic then there really is no hope for humanity. 10/10. This game is a little bit like Jazzpunk, where there isn't really much "gameplay", you just walk around and things happen. Add in some puzzles and a vaporwave aesthetic and this is what you get.If you just want to play a relaxing game where you walk a lot and laugh at what happens, then this is the game for that. You might want to wait a little bit for a patch though, I can't really finish the game due to a bug but it should be fixed very soon as far as I know.Nevermind, the bug has been fixed according to a dev post.. An absolute trip of a game. You'd think this is just some silly joke game weighly heavily on internet memes and... a e s t h e t i c s... But while it's absolutely internet memes and vaporwave aesthetics through and through, it actually does some very cool things and turns what could've been a low-effort joke like a lot of other vaporwave-inspired games on Steam into an hours-long romp through several visually diverse, sprawling worlds with quirky NPCs, neat little puzzles, clever references from your glassware shop called Blaze Runner to real obscure stuff like Air Control's, "Do you know what does it mean?" to a handful of nods to Vinesauce streams in random generic NPC dialogue. It's a love/hate letter to the internet, wrapped in vibrant, visually overloading flair that you either are endeared to or find headache-inducing. For my part I really like what the game does graphically, I like crazy 80s popart, neon aesthetic, cyberpunk, the works, and that's what's on display here. Each world is thematically cohesive as a mix of Vaporwave album covers; environments designed by tearing up Windows 98 software interfaces and turning them into walls, stairs, bridges, you name it, classical sculptures and ancient ruins loom next to tropical paradises dotted with palm trees. It's weird and I like it!World design on the whole works well and maintains a sense of exploration and progression, unlocking new tools and upgrades to unveil new places or remove previously encountered roadblocks is satisfying, and the different sections of each map feel distinct enough so that I never felt I was lost except maybe in GeoCity where the streets can blend together until you've been through them a few times. For music, you should know what you're getting into. The game opens to muffled, stretched out and reverberating sounds of dial-up, and proceeds into all sorts of fun electronic, lo-fi, vaporwave, chillwave, whatever you want to call it, it's nice music to relax to and explore some psychadelic, Windows 98 era worlds. For my part there's enough enjoyable listening that I'd probably grab an OST if it became available at any point, or search it up on Youtube at the least. The mall in the first area got particularly stuck in my head.In the end, there's a surprising amount of substance here, more than I even anticipated a concept like this would provide, and it's some high quality work for what it's doing. I was pleasantly surprised at how much further the game went after leaving the first area, and making it to the final area takes a good eye and lots of curiosity, leaving no stone unturned. It felt earned to hit the end credits, and the game delivered some appropriately fascinating final act-type stuff that I didn't anticipate seeing from a game that you'd expect to be acting as complementary interactive experience for a high person. The less said about the closing minutes of the game, the better, not proclaiming the game's gonna blow your mind with story, but it did its job as an audio/visual journey commendably and ends on a high note. As a vaporwave-loving nerd, I was smitten the whole way through.
